The data taken in 2010 revealed a tremendous amount of information useful for current and future patients. Knee replacements have dramatically increase for the last 20 years and is among the most common procedures performed in the United States.
By region, the South leads with 248.430 cases and a 37.8% share, followed by the Midwest with 187.621 (28.6%), West (111.572 cases – 17%) and Northeast (109.011 cases – 16.6%).
When it comes to success rates, 9 out of 10 patients experience dramatic pain relief after the surgery. 95% of patients reported that they were satisfied with their knee replacement procedure, 90% of the replacements lasted 10 years and 80% lasted 20 years.
In general, complication rates are very low. 6.1% happened during hospital time while 7.5% 90 days after the surgery. Some common complications are:
- Mechanical complication of implant
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) (Blood Clots)
- Complications due to hematomas
- Cardiac complications
- Postoperative infection
- Complication of operative wound
- Respiratory complications
