Knee Replacement Statistics
Knee replacements are one of the most common orthopedic procedures in the United States. In our practice in Naples, knee replacements are among the top 3 procedures performed by Dr. Mead.
In 2010, knee replacement was the 14th most common inpatient procedure in the country with more than 4.5 million Americans living with at least one Total Knee Replacement. That sole year, 650,000 procedures were performed. The most dramatic number is the increase of cases from 1997 to 2010: 84%.
By gender, females are almost two times more prone to receive a knee replacement surgery with a 63% versus a 37% of males. The most common age range is people from 65-84 years old (53.5%), followed by people from 45 to 64 years old (42%).
Curiously, osteoarthritis is the leading cause of knee replacement among Americans. A degenerative disease we have talked about a couple of times. On our next post we will continue with more statistics related to knee replacement.
